Hex is doing all right as far as I can tell. Some photos under the cut.
Yesterday:
Goopy mucus was all over him and things were stuck in it. You can kind of see the layers of it coming off above his back, by the vertical reflection.

Sometimes he was in normal positions and sometimes he looked like his left foreleg and maybe his testicles were hurting. (Well, I can imagine they would, they are frickin' gigantic.)

Today he has mostly been hanging out near his pot, which is pretty close to the filter outflow, and sleeping. He's flipping his gills a lot but not breathing at the surface any more, which seems like a good sign. In the picture you can see food pellets near his hind foot on the left; it's very unusual for him not to snap those up within a few minutes by their smell, so I think maybe his nostrils still have the sticky mucus in them. I hunted a worm for him and presented it to his face, and he ate that just fine.

His prognosis seems good based on the case studies I've read as long as I keep a close eye out for fungus and he keeps eating! (Fungus and other wound problems in axolotls are helped by putting them in the fridge, which despite its thrilling, wacky appeal I am not eager to require.)

The Hacchin in her hand-blown glass! Not so nice to drink from, but totally cute for wee axie playtime!
