I sent email to my committee members asking them about scheduling my Ph.D. thesis defense in April or May. Go me!

... So far, one is on sabbatical until June and one is doing field work for almost those entire months.

Extra committee members were standard in my department, but they also weren't expected to do anything except show up to the generals and defense, so the commitment was easy to make.

That would be a good arrangement. I am allowed to videoconference people in, so I'm looking into that.
