Upgrading to Snow Leopard so I could use free microarray analysis software was totally worth the $30, but it was NOT worth having my well-behaved TextEdit suddenly THINK IT IS SMART and start REPLACING SHIT AUTOMATICALLY. Goddamn it I fucking hate auto-replacement defaults, especially ones that are NOT ASCII.

(Also why is my computer now clicking all wrong? It's acting like other people's computers, where you point at stuff and that is considered intent, so I think it's not just broken, but I can't turn it OFF.)

You mean that pointing without clicking is considered intent? That's pretty weird.

Can't remember if yours is a Mac or a MacBook. I just went through System Preferences for the Mouse and Trackpad here, and can't see any kind of option to do that :S

Do you have a local Apple Store that you can go into? I've found that going to the Genius Bar and saying "MY COMPUTER IS DOING SOMETHING STUPID PLEASE FIX" works quite well :)

Yes, I should probably take my aged, grubby little laptop in there. Kind of embarrassing, though. :)

Awww. I think they're trained not to laugh. Remember, the grad student with ancient laptop today is the CEO of tomorrow! (Or something).

More seriously, have you tried it with a mouse to see whether the same thing happens? Same issue with trackpad and mouse would be more likely a software/configuration fault, but occurring only with trackpad is more likely to be a trackpad fault. Those things do wear out!

Super smart suggestion! I think you're probably right, and will try.

Sounds like maybe "One Finger Tap to Click" is turned on in the Trackpad preferences? A lot of people subconsciously slightly tap at the end of pointing...

It's not, though. I am mystified.
