EMP Pop Conference (Friday)
Apr. 16th, 2010 10:57 amWill write and link re: last night's keynote panel when I have more electricity. The EMP cafe is not laptop-friendly!
This morning: Breakfast of pastry and fruit paid for by Paul Allen. Okay! But their wireless is no true wireless, as I can't ssh.
The EMP is a crazy cool building inside as well as out. Currently I'm in "Level 3" for "Engendering Technology" with Elizabeth Keenan, Sarah Dougher, and Emily Zemler; mod Marisa Meltzer. There does appear to be an accessible way to get here, but I came in as directed though the opening door of the SFM and up an angled staircase lined with metal pipes and blue and gold light segments. Here in Level 3, exposed insulation is the order of the day, but it's all painted entirely RED. What I have seen of the SFM so far is a statue of the Ninja Turtle Donatello and a cocoon from the eponymous movie.
Keenan is examining the word "hipster" as applied to the fans of the Dirty Projectors. If I were well prepared, I would have listened to this band last night.
hipster: white, priv, usu masc, tend appropriation; but r'ship between "high/low" cultural stuff
whoa, these guys redid a Black Flag album to sound like "world music" with sketchy African-ish guitar work and vocals
(am I think only one who twitches when she says "African pygmy"?
use of women's vocals to affect the genre/sound of resulting music - so-called-by-reviewers "moans" really aren't - "fembots" - are we animals or technology?
Dougher
Girls Rock camps supposed to "empower" but is it a commercialized version?
note that it came out of academia, apparently a feature of 3rd wave feminism - now staffed mostly by queer riot grrls, which I think is a win but okay maybe straight chicks useful too
women-only environment to foster mentorship, but is it a separatist utopia that will ill fit girls to succeed in the open market?
counselors may not be connecting usefully when questioning girls' tastes (Jonas Bros movie where girl gains confidence through romance - campers know what they're supposed to think, "oKAY", but don't find it compelling)
I like that the presenter is intimately involved with the camps and loves them, but is still questioning!
Michigan Women's Music Fest - not allowed to bring music with ANY male voice or even men playing instruments
"rock camps for liberated feminist people"! save the little boys from masculinity :)
I would like to speak out in favor of my MHC experience but am not feeling coherent at all
Zemler
no significant aptitude difference between sexes, need to encourage socialization differently so women can produce and engineer music as well as performing
movie: Laurel Canyon, Frances McDormand as fictional woman producer of a kind that is exceedingly rare if existent at all
I was heading to another session but I find I'm headachey and, not claustrophobic exactly, but really wanting to be outside. I'll still plan to hit this afternoon's "Bent" panel (gayness and Lady Gaga, what's not to love?) after lunch, but maybe right now I'll check out the Seattle Center's Japanese Cultural Festival/whatever cherry blossoms might be unexpended.
