jinian: (mighty pea)

Many photos from Sunday. I still have a big backlog of Lake Tahoe shots, too. When did this become a photo blog? I'll schedule some self-indulgent emo posts in there too.

Fruit makers
Tiny pink grape leaves!

Apple buds, so pretty.

Apple blossoms! Look at those pink anthers.

Plum buds and...

Plum flowers, also really beautiful. Not sure whether I like these or the apple blossoms better.

There was a bumblebee investigating the plum flowers and the side of the house, but she was camera-shy.

Wild plants
Tiny spirals in the dandelion inflorescence.

Dicentra formosa, my current favorite. Look at the tiny buds like a morningstar. (Anyone need help distinguishing this from stinky-bob? I will school you.)

Virtue is rewarded: I cleared a bunch of evil blackberries out from under the plum trees and found this adorable tiny Oregon grape. Up with natives!

Daffodils
"Geranium" daffodil. Why name flowers after other flowers that they don't even resemble? These smell wonderful, though, and I love the daffodils that come out in groups. Their buds are so fat and angular.

"Minnow" daffodils come in sets too. And look at the petal-tip poinks!

A yellow and orange daffodil from a mixed batch.

"Pink Charm" daffodil. Interesting that the pink to orange colors are always in the trumpet bit rather than the outer organs. There's got to be a promoter that spans both! Look at both under a microscope for cone-shaped epidermal cells?

M-pig will think this "Chromacolor" one looks feminine -- or maybe not until I said that? (Mental soundtrack: "Kodachrome")

Keeping a skeptical eye on the "Green Charm" daffs. Wasn't too impressed with the color last year. I like them very well if I pretend they ought to be white.

Perennials and others
I love hellebores, as long as they are properly nodding. This "upward facing" mutation people keep sticking into lovely modest flowers is offensive. Look at the leaves!

New heuchera leaves for old.

Variegated hosta leaves come up in a little cone and then uncurl. Hyacinth is "City of Haarlem" (yes, mental soundtrack is "Angel of Harlem").

Only one "Woodstock" hyacinth blooming this year, and I don't see foliage from the others. Maybe they aren't very hardy? This was a very mild winter, but I have no specific memory of them last spring, after that long hard freeze, either.

Dwarf bearded iris. These have got to bloom based on temperature, not season, because I remember getting bearded irises in July/August in Poulsbo.

"Sorbet" peony is HAPPY.

Brightly bright purple tulip! Look at the frosted silver color, too. I think this is a species tulip, but I don't recall its name.

Wild-type flower, therefore (self-?) fertile.

This white tulip's name escapes me.

Rue's new leaves are yellow-green instead of the mature blue-green, I assume because of later wax accumulation. So gracefully lobed; I bet William Morris liked them.

Notes
Also blooming: white heather, magenta crab apples, and white tulips on the way to the cafeteria. Cherry trees!
Sending up gorgeous muscular shoots as usual: meadow-rue.
New, purple baby fronds are on the Japanese painted fern, but the photo was terrible, sorry.
The other peony is not so happy, unfortunately, but it does have a few leaves coming up. Might need to move it, but not sure where. Less sun?
Thanks to Wim's raspberry-patch detail last year, some of the healthy canes are over my head as they leaf out. I'm looking forward to this!
Might move the rhubarb plants out of the raised bed; they looked a little cramped last year. Should do it soon, since they're starting up.

I thought pink charm looked girlie too - very nice flowers, I think the non-standard daffs are my favorite!
