It's amazing how productive and domestic one can become when faced with an unrelated deadline, especially when writing this particular grant last year produced vast amounts of frustration. I even post to LJ and answer email!

So are we all just fucking appalled at the terrorism in Ohio, or have people not heard about it? I haven't seen much comment, and I know I am just fucking appalled. How do we get through to these people?

Slow progress is being made on civilizing the home, with some help from Tom Swift and His Custom Book-Shelves. This is good because soon it will be cold. I'm not at all sure how winter is going to go in this house, considering how cold it's been in here when outside hasn't been that bad.

I've only heard about it from nonstandard news outlets (iow, the internets). I don't know if there IS a way to get through to idiots, because they will persist in being idiots until they get themselves killed doing something stupid, though unfortunately that often doesn't happen until AFTER they breed.

After all, if half of the city I work for persists in thinking that anyone with non-white skin is a) a criminal, b) filthy and/or subhuman and c) "probably illegal anyway" I'm sure it only gets worse elsewhere. By this point I kind of expect everyone to be a racist asshole by default, which is a sad mental place for me. :P

I am with you on the 'unrelated deadlines' - the best way I can get a lot done at work is to have some OTHER thing I am avoiding.

Cold lair = bad.

I saw the thing about Dayton. The Midwest breaks my heart sometimes. Weirdly, I grew up with all this respect for Islam (even my MOM was like "Allah is just god, it's another word for the same thing") but I think in general Islam is so poorly understood even without overt anti-Arab sentiment that it's going to take a LOT of education. I'd like to think that the liberal religious communities there (Unitarians!) are on it and reaching out to people, but who knows.

How scary though to be from a war-torn region and then to feel attacked where you think of yourself as safe.
