(Our TA took a picture of me taking his picture. The sleeve on the left is another student, also taking a picture.)

(First, a scraping of mud from the bay floor. This was actually too successful; really deep mud tends not to have live organisms in it.)

(Into the giant sieve!)

(The surface grabber was the right tool for the job.)

(All the shell debris from the surface of the flat bottom looked like it had been soaking in tea, not at all like the dark-gray mud.)

(This net dredge brought up a lot of rocky surface chunks. My organisms would have been in this one.)

Result:

(Pretty much completely came clean in the wash.)

Obtained: a lot of worms, a whole lot of brachiopods, some molluscs not seen since the late 70s, and NOT ONE of the sea squirts I wanted. Also we were really cold! But how often do I get to grub in the mud for science?

When I was in 7th grade or so, we did something much like this. Science at Sea, maybe? Anyway, the memorable part was that we pulled up some sea cucumbers, then dissected them, then ate them!!!OMGELEVENTY!!
