Yesterday was the UW Taiwanese Students' Association Night Market, yay! [livejournal.com profile] marzipan_pig and I went, and found it much more crowded than last year, partly with more non-Asian people and more kids. Interesting. The space they're using really wasn't sufficient; hope they made tons of money, but also that they expand into adjacent areas next time.

Foods eaten: Popcorn chicken (pretty good), Taiwanese sausages with sweet sauce and minced garlic (fantastic), taro milk tea (a little bland, with a zillion tapioca pearls), bamboo rice wrap (really good, tons of great fillings).

Other Taiwanese food recently includes delicious stuff from Rocking Wok. (Menu page 1 and page 2, scanned as big old jpgs with legible hanzi.) Thousand-layer pancakes rock my world.

So good!

I was going to send you the Rocking Wok menu pics on the CD I plan to send you, only ha ha! I still cannot find the blank CDs after moving! So could you recommend other awesome foods from the scanned menus please? :)

I vote for King Tu style spare ribs, wined chicken, preserved egg with tofu (unless you do not like preserved eggs, which are the black ones), jellyfish, simmered egg(2) (I think it is salty egg, which I LOVE on plain white rice porridge), leek pancake, preserved egg and salty pork congee, pork rice cake and/or soup, beef shaved-noodle soup, check-r noodle soup or peddler noodle soup, oyster w/ egg/veggie, stinky tofu, cold noodle with chicken, blood cake.

Haha! Uh yeah. Of course, it depends on the place too...

The ones that strike me as particularly Taiwan are the oyster w/ egg/veggie and the stinky tofu.

So what IS in it? We could view fatty pork, little shrimps, peanuts, a chestnut, and glutinous rice. It was fabulous! I had to pick the shrimps out but it was worth the work.

Also a shiitake. I'd forgotten the peanuts. Maybe it varies by who makes them?

Ooo tasty! I think like Jinian says, it just varies by who makes it... usually when I've had it, it has similar ingredients to zongzi (sticky rice in bamboo leaves, savory or sweet), which usually has fatty pork, little shrimp, peanuts, chestnuts, mushrooms, and egg yolks in some combination... the sweet ones are usually white sticky rice (it's brown in the savory b/c it's flavored with soy sauce) and red bean paste.

Is that what that was? I was riding in to my office in MGH at around 8:45 and got hit in the rear wheel with a poorly-aimed water balloon, or maybe a cup of ice. Someone shouted "sorry" as I continued, and since I was heading in to the office for a minor emergency, I didn't stick around to find out what was going on. Smelled good, though. By the time I got out, they'd pretty much gotten everything packed, so I never did find out. And now I know. Cool!

Yep, that would have been the "hit a photocopied celebrity face with a water balloon" game. I definitely recommend catching the market next year if you can. They have the excellent domain areyouhungry.org (http://areyouhungry.org/).
