From jeliza: Was the 2004 Election Stolen? in Rolling Stone. I'm glad a more solid media outlet, such as it is, is involved, but I'm feeling awfully disenfranchised (ha fucking ha) about the whole mess.
It does leave one feeling pretty ineffectual. I look at what my dad is doing (he is very active in "Democrats Abroad" and they are doing lots of work to make sure the ballot issue doesn't happen again) and I wonder what it is that I can do. In some ways, I feel constrained because I live in an area where the majority of people vote the way I do so I feel action is needed elsewhere than here.
All this stuff reminds me of that case many years ago (the 70's? I forget), where a woman was stabbed to death in full view of several witnesses (I believe it was in New York City), and not a single person did anything.
As I child I used to feel, or somehow get the impression, that when something this awful was revealed that people did something about it. It felt like people took these sorts of allegations seriously, that it was a big deal. Nowadays I feel like we're essentially seeing the country get stabbed to death right in front of us, and everyone just watches and feels like they can't do anything. And to be honest, I really don't know what they can do, and THAT'S what really scares me. All the avenues of action I feel that are available to me are ones that, in the final equation, can be totally dismissed when someone else has enough money to just blow their way in through illegal means that won't be prosecuted even if they're discovered.
Wow, how depressing. And how awful that her parents moved out of the city after her Mom witnessed a murder, and then Kitty is targeted practically at random to be murdered. That's some weird coincidence.
