Not only is it the salmon-and-Rainier design instead of that fucking whale, the article says "Northwest Native American design." That still doesn't narrow it down all that much, but it's not like they could have been more specific about that awful mishmash. Many thanks to kayseattle for telling me about this! It helps give me strength to finish my massive entomology paper, which I've been working on for many hours now.
Almost done, almost done. Only a rough draft.

The thing about that whale is that I think it would have been really confusing for the rest of the country, like, wtf IS that thing? The ones I think work best have sort of a character unique to the state they're from but are also comprehensible to other people: the horsie on Kentucky, the magnolia on Mississippi, etc. Ones like that GIANT FLOATING GEM on whatever state that is are just weird, and I think the orca one would have been too much like that one.

(OK, I think Neile Armstrong floating is space is strange too, the ones with people make them so small and odd, but maybe that's just me.)

We can't all have obvious Midwestern icons such as COW and CHEESE and CORN :)
