From a post to the Drizzle Salon (BBS):

... there's no ETA on a fix. Furthermore, Drizzle has no
>intention of telling people when there is a problem of this nature. To send
>email to everyone would just slow it down more (which is at least trivially
>true) and, say, making a post here or on the System News on the web site
>is evidently not going to happen.
>
>I have canceled my service with Drizzle effective September first, and you
>remaining folks know I don't do it lightly. I am -shaking- right now.
>I can't believe this bullshit.

I was blown away by the complete stonewalling I got from Bill on this when I called in. They had no justification for not telling people there was a problem; they just weren't going to do it. I'm really regretting ever recommending them to anyone, and I take it back. It was true for years, but they've gone to hell since the (still completely unmentioned) sale.

So, anybody know anywhere I can post about this experience? And just what can I say without having the law on me?

Suggestions on where to post ...

seattle.general? The seattle communities on livejournal?
You could also file a BBB complaint.

Good grief. That sucks. What was the nature of the problem?

I actually think they started going to hell before the sale, but that's neither here nor there. (Early 2004 was before the sale, wasn't it?) The super-lame public response to a hacker problem put the last nail in that coffin as far as I was concerned.

I, too, regret recommending them to anyone.

(Oh, duh -- "my emails haven't been going out from Drizzle since yesterday afternoonish".)

And maybe longer than that, but I don't know exactly what's going out or coming in compared to what should be. Some things come through immediately, some things take a day or more judging by headers.

They stopped being great a while before the sale, certainly, but I wouldn't say they were actively bad until that password debacle.

Oy. That's fucked up. The stonewalling about the hacker incident in February last year could have been an isolated incident, but with this one, it sounds like it's a conscious institutional decision. Fuck that. Respectable ISPs have outages lists, and notify their users when there are problems like that. I'm glad I cancelled my Drizzle service, now, and that I haven't been recommending them when people ask.

As for what you can say without having the law on you, I'm not a lawyer, but my understanding is that something can't be libelous or defamatory if it's true.

I think the distinction between slander and libel is that slander must be false; libel must merely be malicious and defamatory. But I think that non-slanderous libel is not a crime in the US. I really have no idea what I'm talking about.

I really miss the active, lively Drizzle that I only saw for a few years after joining. It's hard to find a group of interesting people like that. It's a shame that the company has gone so far downhill also.

I really have no idea what I'm talking about.

I have whole years when I feel exactly that way.

Actually, the only difference between libel and slander is that the former is written, the latter is oral. Both can constitute defamation.

If it's true and factual, it's not actionable. That's in theory, of course...we all know anyone can sue anyone for anything at any time. Sigh.

And when you find a new place to run away from Drizzle, lemme know. I'm having the same crappy issues. Jerks.

I've been happy where I am now, though it isn't as well-supported as drizzle was. I'm really sorry; good luck with your grievance-filing!

You're at Eskimo, right? I like 'em, though I haven't done any business with them in ages. I got my first UNIX shell account at Eskimo back in ... um ... the mid 80's sometime. They were running a six-months-for-$6 special.
