May. 29th, 2001 10:41 amThere's a baby in the office today. The other day there was a little boy. Why is this okay? It's not that I dislike kids, but I have enough trouble keeping my mind on my work without people waving them at me all the time.
The part that really bugs me is that the child must say hello to everyone. The seven-month-old obviously doesn't really mind, but the boy from the other day clearly didn't want to go around talking to people. Maybe this mostly bothers me because I used to be the kid who got no respect for wanting to be alone. "Oh, are you SHY?!" and then they invade your space. I don't care if it's polite for little kids to go hug all and sundry.
I feel a little bad for not standing up for the little boy enough. All I felt able to say was, "he doesn't have to meet me if he doesn't want to. It's fine." Which is something, I suppose, but it got immediately steamrolled by the person who'd brought him in. As if giving the kid a hard time until he relents is going to make him like new people. He didn't relent, incidentally, which pleases me quite a bit.
