I went to my somewhat delayed appointment with UW admissions today, and I was lucky enough to see a very personable counselor named Robin. She was thorough and organized, and we chatted a little about needlework when we were done with business. Also she gave credit where it was due, which was to me and my good grades. Yay. If you need to see someone down there, ask for her.

Good news for me:
My transcripts from lately are excellent, and the Mount Holyoke screwed-upness isn't going to affect my chances much. "It's a clear case of 'older and wiser,'" she said, and because my overall GPA is above 2.5 (even with the incomplete-Fs the MHC one's 2.1) my application will definitely undergo comprehensive review.

What's more, the MHC credits do not count toward the 90 I'm allowed to transfer. The policy is that 90 credits must have been earned at 4-year college level for a bachelor's degree, and MHC is a four-year college. So if I can work out the financial aspects, I can take more courses for credit transfer at a community college. Robin also confirmed that requirements can be met by community college courses even if the credits don't transfer, which is great. Aaaand, most of the biology 201 courses at North Seattle are still open for fall. (I could never get in at Central because they're horribly full and only offered at 8am.)

You know, I made the original title of this post "doom mitigated", but I think I'll change that now. This is great.

Evidently I have a very strong application. Robin says I should definitely talk about my illness at MHC and my other challenges in getting here, but my recent record speaks for itself. Oddly, it's helpful that I've taken second-year Spanish already, because it's really hard to get into language courses at UW, and I should point that out on the application.

Qualified good news for other transfer applicants:
A lot of the deferred students from the defunct Direct Transfer Agreement have chosen not to come to the UW, which means there's room for the rest of us sooner than they'd feared. Spring quarter is definitely not closed! Robin estimated 240 spaces for transfer applicants in spring. They're giving some priority to Washington community college transfer students with associate's degrees and to people with 90 or more credits to transfer in. She didn't say so, but it sounded like people with less than two years' worth of credits would do better to build some up by attending a community college for a bit. That's all I remember without prompting, but I might have more impressions if anyone wants to ask questions about this. I know at least a couple of you folks are likely to be interested.

Oh, yes, Robin said that applications which are not accepted will be denied rather than deferred, but that, apart from the application fee of almost $40, there is no problem with repeated applications. They don't care whether you've been denied before.

In other good news, I biked all the way to Schmitz Hall and back, and my knees have not yet tried to kill me. My head started to hurt some when I got overheated, but it quit when I cooled down. I had the stamina to make it all the way up hill with no breaks that weren't mandated by traffic signals. Evidently I'm not hopelessly unable to exercise ever again. So. Happy.

Excellent news! It might not even be so bad to take bio at North, assuming that the money can work out. It would keep you progressing toward your goal, and be cheaper.

yay yay yay yay yay!

I thought they might be reasonable about the credit transferring but it's good to hear. That policy seems more sensible than a straight "only 90 credits transferrable" policy, really.

also yay on the non-Kyleecidal knees!

Sorry I didn't say anything - it hit me on a day of ouch for other reasons which I'm sure you know about and understand :/ Seems somehow banal to celebrate one person's success while mourning another person's... lack of success. But then I suppose the ability to feel contradictory emotions at the same time is part of what makes us human, and someone else's bad news should not negate your good news.
