dude, where's my yard?
Jul. 23rd, 2004 11:51 amYesterday, just before noon, some so-called "Seattle Tree Preservation" people showed up and took down the tree in our front yard. (It's not fully in this picture, but it shows a little on the left as "nice columnar cedar".) They started the chainsaws and I called the landlord. I didn't get him. By the time I was done leaving an urgent message for him, our tree was down. By the time I got upstairs to freak out at Wim, our tree had become wood chips. And they didn't stop there.
The chainsaw people switched weapons and started whacking at our giant quince bush. They didn't stop until it was shorter than they were. Of course, they left the damned suckers that spring up all over, why actually cut the nuisancy parts?
At least the fellow who thinned out the lilac did a decent job. They seem to have suitable division of labor at least. By the time they started up in the back, though, I was a wreck. Who knew what they were going to do? Was I supposed to stop them? Would they listen to me if I did? And they were making the yard look awful. I probably overreacted some, but it was scary and they were killing a tree. It was awful.
It turns out this was supposed to happen, but not until August. The landlord did eventually, after it was all over, call back and apologize (to Wim, since I was in the shower) for not telling us. I half expect him to do something slightly excessive in an effort to compensate; he has before in less alarming situations. And the yard looks okay now, though it's really sunny in a few places it shouldn't be. Still. Not a fun experience.

I will remember not to ask the management company to have any yardwork done here.
