I don't think I can read this. It sounds mildly interesting (I feel that I should care more about John Dee than I do), and the blurbs are good, so it was a reasonable thing to grab at the library. But I have a profound difference with its design. The cover is fine if a little Klimt-derivative (and is that meant to be his arm?), but the title page has an extremely Mackintosh rose. I twitched, argh, totally wrong period!, but persevered. It just won't work, though. All the chapter numbers and first lines are done in an Arts-and-Crafts font. Bleh bleh bleh. I suppose I'll keep trying.

I read half this book in Borders at some point, and haven't bothered to find it again: it fell victim to that fault of historical fiction where the main character meets every single famous person who was anywhere near the time and place he happens to be living in (Elizabeth Bathory, in this case).

Anyway . . . hi! I'm friending you, for the Diana Wynne Jones and the ten-year-old Alanna admiration and for not hating math.

Hello. You've been writing some really interesting stuff. I'll have to reorganize the reading list again. :)

How'd you find me? It doesn't look like we have any people in common.

I celebrated a newly acquired paid account by doing a search for people in Seattle who like Diana Wynne Jones, on the grounds that I like both :)
