fortune cookie day
Oct. 30th, 2003 10:04 amThe day before yesterday, I went to Hana for lunch. Curry udon is so comforting. On the way there is when I was lent the David Quammen book, which is quite good so far, lots of good turns of phrase even if the overall tone is somehow not exactly what I want from it. But this is a story about a fortune cookie. It's a little weird when any restaurant that is Asian at all decides to give fortune cookies, but I can always use more fortunes for the red drawer.
The fortune cookie, which did not taste very good, said: Tomorrow will be a productive day, Don't oversleep. [sic of course]
Given that the day before yesterday was the day that I stayed up far too late watching auroras -- okay, stayed up until a reasonable 12:30 watching auroras and then until 2:30 attemtpting to watch auroras -- I had kind of written off my plans for the supposedly productive day yesterday. But I woke up with enough time to grab breakfast, run out the door, and get to school with enough time to do the chem lab for this week, and that's what I did.
I finished the chem lab, slowly and carefully, with plenty of time to spare before class. In that half-hour, I went to the computer lab and caught up on email somewhat. Then there was class, which was fairly interesting in parts, and I came home.
At home, I arranged movie viewing for the evening while clearing the sod (%#&@ sod, that has plastic netting in it) from a section of the right-of-way, in which I intend to plant lavender and things. It wasn't a very big section, because my shoulder began to ache and I figured overdoing it wasn't going to help me dig later, but it was more than one load of sod that needed to go to the compost pile.
Speaking of the compost pile, I dug over half of it out when I was done with the sod. (The shoulder-ache was from banging the chunks of grass on the pitchfork to knock dirt loose, not from actually digging.) That started to hurt -- clearly I should do this kind of thing more often -- so I quit and came in.
Once inside, I tidied up the kitchen a bit before realizing that none of the dishes were actually offending me, whereas the stove top was disgusting. Wim and Eli arrived within minutes of each other to find me singing along to loud music and wiping down the last of the oven door. I believe they, wisely, were frightened.
I claimed the cleaning as my contribution to dinner, but that didn't last long. I peeled garlic and stirred the curry sauce. They did the hardest parts, though; Eli took the skin off mostly-frozen salmon, which did not look like a fun job, and Wim did all the chopping 'cause he's good at that. My cleaning theme continued as I cleared the table, and I was sufficiently proud of myself that I dragged out candles so we could dine sophisticatedly.
Dinner was quite good. I decided that the bok choy was odd with the Thai red curry, but the salmon and broccoli and bamboo shoots all went very well. After we were done, Deb showed up from kung fu with her dinner, and ate it. Math homework was looked at, but there were too many people going in different directions and I felt left behind and stupid. I left the room for a bit and came back after a little decompression and an aurora check (none).
Then the movie! Also the poking, which seems to be inevitable if you get very many of the movie posse in the same place. I hadn't seen Project A before, and I really liked it. (Except for the outtakes. Ow. Poor Jackie Chan.) I'm looking forward to Part 2.
Deb had to go home, and the rest of us were pretty tired too, so instead of Buckaroo Banzai we watched some Cardcaptor Sakura next. Animaniacs was tried but failed, due to a sudden loss of sound on the tape. VHS does wear out, I guess.
Then Eli went home. Then sex. Then sleep.
Then waking up at 7:30 this morning, argh. I wish I had been able to sleep more. Two days in a row with short sleep make Kylee something something. Wim did eventually manage to explain the math problem to me this morning, which I think I'd have been able to get if derivatives had been explained worth a damn yet, and we finished digging the compost. My head hurts, though, and the emotional volatility is a sign that maybe I should nap rather than going to chem class. Not sure yet. Anyway, I got a heck of a lot done yesterday. I'm pretty pleased.
