jinian: (clow reads)

Castle Waiting v2, Linda Medley. I was very grouchy in my post-workshop stress hangover and required Yotsuba&!, but Wim had reorganized the books and I couldn't find any (until the next morning when of course there it was). This was a very good second choice for lovable characters and peaceful hijinks. Next issue is due out in April!

"Seven Sexy Cowboy Robots", Sandra McDonald. Sweet, funny, poly, hot. What more could I ask for?

"The Lady Who Plucked Red Flowers beneath the Queen’s Window", Rachel Swirsky. Amazing, epic, and wonderful.

The Decoy Princess, Dawn Cook. This has a lot going for it, and I liked it the first time through. On reread it's colored by my recollection that the sequel was All Wrong. Maybe I should see if I still think that.

City of Bones, Cassie Clare. Bought in the airport because I didn't think I'd read it before. I realized I had when I was annoyed all over again at the author's self-references. It does not suck; she was always a pretty good writer even when the fic scenes were stolen outright. But I think not remembering I'd read it before is pretty damning.

A considerable number of Kathy Reichs mysteries. They're kind of the same thing again and again without as much science as I want, and yet they're also kind of satisfying.

Tripping to Somewhere, Kristopher Reisz. I mostly remembered the "product placement for mescaline" part from Rachel's review, but I was more struck by the way this book is full of fairy-tale shrapnel. The pillar of salt is obvious, but the (wtf really excessive) injury late in the book is the Snow Queen all over, and there are plenty of other twisted bits of stories that are really interesting to see. Also, lesbian girl is thoroughly lesbian and gets laid, hurrah.

American Nerd: the Story of My People, Benjamin Nugent. Sometimes perceptive, sometimes pathetic nonfiction. It's worth reading despite his apparent lack of realization that slash exists. (Seriously: you write about yaoi and Kirk/Spock, but fail to mention the gigantic buzzing hive of activity around basically every fandom ever?) Wraps up with an unrelated, bizarre short story about frat boys vs. a demon that possesses their mascot statue because they put a strap-on on it. No, really. WTF.
