This is definitely one that I could see taking a longer time to get into, because nothing huge happens at any appreciable rate. How do you feel about Pamela's Tam Lin? It's sort of the same thing -- an extended, funny, and beautifully presented paean to college -- combined with sheer pretty, understated but effective emotions, and, well, what to do when they don't love you back. Probably I'd have watched it for that last one, because it hit my unrequited-love-for-friends button big-time, but it is also stunningly lovely.
Hagu is an odd character, and I still don't like the way the physically older and mentally much older guys are so into her, but I love the way they all react to the situation. Did you get to meet Yamada Ayumi? I really identified with her and liked her; she's talented, assertive, and stuck with a giant crush that's going nowhere. (They do the anime thing of physical abuse played for laughs with Ayu, but I chose to read that as more metaphorical ass-kicking.)
