oh noes! invisible ditch!
Aug. 29th, 2007 05:15 pm(Please note that I am totally uninjured.)
My plan today was to go pick more blueberries.
Not only did I not get blueberries (because the farm is open Thurs-Sat only), I had to have the car towed. See, I figured I would drive from the farm that spurned me to somewhere there was cell service and call Wim to direct me to another berry place. (He may be coming to regret getting me just the phone rather than the Googlephone, as I do bug him thus sometimes.) I drove along Big Rock Road into Duvall town center, since that seemed like the place to go for broadcast utilities, and didn't see any great place to pull over, but hey, there is the side of the road, I'll just get off a little way and the scant traffic can go around me.
Ha ha ha.
What I did not know was that the nice grassy lawn at the side of the road was not the two inches deep that it appeared to be. The ditch was not six feet back where those salmonberry bushes were. The ditch and the verge were one and the same, and the bastard was steep. I drove into it slightly, tried to steer out, slid farther in, and reached a point at which I felt that the car was about to roll over. Panic! I tried to drive out, but succeeded only in hanging the car from the side of the pavement by its frame. It wasn't going anywhere, though it still seemed to be considering rolling over if I did anything wrong.
But, you know, everyone who went by at least slowed down to make sure things were okay, and the first couple people pulled over and turned around; a fireman and a cop showed up separately to help; the cop recommended a tow truck driver who showed up within fifteen minutes; the driver charged me less than the one-hour minimum fee. (Wes, 425.333.6669.) The car is fine, and I'm done shaking (though now kinda brainless from adrenaline low). It went pretty well for a thing that went so badly.
