Sick and non-brainy though I may be at the moment, I can still make pie. (And point you at an International Blog Against Racism Week link roundup.)

Oddberry pie

Two crusts' worth of pie dough; pastry flour and hard fat are very helpful for approaching the flaky/tender ideal.
Filling:
  • 1 cup black currants [Capitol Hill farmers' market]

  • 1.5 cups gooseberries [University District farmers' market]

  • 2.5 cups blueberries [picked by me at Mountain View]

  • 1/4 cup flour (or a dose of the thickening agent of your choice)

  • 3/4 cup granulated sugar

  • a shake of ginger

  • a shake of cinnamon

  • a few drops of lemon oil

Roll out the bottom crust and put it into a pie plate, trimming the edge so that about an inch hangs over the plate.

Mix the filling together and pour it into the crust.

Roll out the top crust. Make a lattice if you like, or a solid top crust would be fine too. Trim the top crust shorter than the bottom one, roll the bottom crust over the top, and press together. Don't overwork it! If you're persnickety like me and the kitchen's not too warm, though, do make a perfect fluted edge.

Bake at 450° F for ten minutes, then at 350° F until the filling threatens to overrun the lattice and take over the world (maybe 45 minutes). Wait long enough that you won't hurt yourself, then eat. Vanilla ice cream was a really good idea.

Notes:
  • Currants are very strongly flavored. Joy of Cooking recommends 1 currant:2 raspberry, which I can imagine being harmonious (but very curranty).

  • Currants and gooseberries have persistent stems and blossoms. This makes them a complete pain in the ass to cook with. I cannot think of a feasible way to engineer a separation into them.

  • Gooseberries. Baby tapirs.

Mmmmmm, pie.

Do you deliver?

Also, do not be making tapir pie.

I do not! I keep pie for myself! But I might share with you if you came over. Not sure this pie goes with a Mandalay outing, but perhaps a Lush-associated treat would be appropriate.

I now wish to go pick raspberries (because I still have a bunch of currants) but I have NO TIME EVER AGAIN ARGH.

That's awesome, thank you. I have currants, blueberries, and gooseberries in my yard, growing in approximately these proportions, which makes them difficult for doing anything with any ONE of them.

If only I hadn't already taken my sleeping pill, pie would be mine NOW (or however quickly I can drive to your house).

Lush trip - I am maybe available Thursday, does that work with your non-raspberry picking accomodating schedule?

Mmm, pie. My currant/gooseberry cross has berries (yay!), but not enough for actually making anything with, so I shall save this for future reference.

Oh, yum, currant/gooseberry cross. Do you have the Orus-8, or some other one?

I forgot to say the part where normal people may want more sugar than I use. :)

Yup, it's an Orus-8. We only planted it last year, so I'm very excited that it's already bearing -- the white and black currants on either side of it aren't doing anything yet.

G. doesn't like things very sweet either, so I tend to undersweeten berry things, if anything. :)
