made stuff: Clapotis scarf
Jan. 16th, 2005 04:50 pmI made my mom a Clapotis scarf from the Fall issue of Knitty for her birthday. Hers is Provence coral-colored mercerized cotton yarn, due in part to the fact that the original yarn is rather more expensive. She loves coral, and I knew she was the wrong shape for her entire suit (!) of that color, so it was a good choice even though it's not the colorway that made me think of making it for her. She was very pleased, and so am I.

The appeal to me was that it's kinky. Really. Dropping stitches on purpose, using the ladders as a design element. It's not vanilla knitting. You're doing a fair amount of mildly elaborate stuff, passing markers by the dozen and knitting through the back loops (mildly risque in itself), and all the while you know that when you get to the edge of the piece you're going to drop that stitch, that one there -- ! Well, it's the kind of thing that might excite a person a little.
