everybody's gardens
Apr. 18th, 2004 11:10 amIn mine, the acquisition of the Allegra prescription has meant that I can clear a lot more of the bed by the roses in back. Half of it is resplendent with squills, so I think I won't dig that up yet, but the other half is free from grass now. I've moved several of the pea-patch foxgloves to their new home, and they seem well so far. The rest will move soonish, and the garlic cloves that like to sprout in the kitchen will go in there as well. My plans to put in lavender are foundering on the lack of cheap big pots, because I think the lavenders will want more drainage than is there, but something will happen eventually.
I got plants from
The peas are growing large enough that I need to give them sticks today. This userpic is from a couple of weeks ago. The onions and garlic seem very happy too. Must get more space for veggies. Maybe the tax return will help with this raised-bed idea I still haven't done anything about.
Seasons in Seattle are strange compared to home, which is only one zone and two hours' driving away. Now blooming:
- Late-season daffodils
- Later tulips
- Squills
- Bearded irises (?!)
- Lilacs
- Early roses
- Early rhododendrons
- Wisteria
- Last bits of fruit trees
- California and oriental poppies, which should be summer solstice flowers
- Golden chain
The osmarea is done, the quince is mostly done, the hyacinths and Dutch irises are done. It's bizarre. Lilacs are later at home, and early bulbs actually come up before later ones there instead of all at once. I was sure that the bearded iris last year was an aberration, but I'm growing these freaks myself this year. They're too early!
The neighbors who garden, as opposed to the neighbors who hire their lawn mowed, have proven themselves mad. They dug up all their squills while they were blooming -- I am not against digging up the ones you can reach, it's not like you can get rid of them, but how can you do it while they're awake? Also, they have planted English ivy in the big dirt. They seem to want it to engulf their house. Crazies.
