disjointed Friday Harbor love
Sep. 25th, 2010 06:14 pmAt the bio department retreat at Friday Harbor Labs this weekend. As far as I know I am the only one who flew here in a sea plane; it was glorious and FAST. I beat the ferry crowd here despite getting up hours later and walking to the labs from town.
Such a beautiful day. Lots of talks, in pecha-kucha format so kind of a game, and hanging out with people. Caught two snakes and a grasshopper with M! The salal berries are no good this year, though. I built a tiny lean-to of asteraceous stems and dead grass, but it was sadly demolished by an unintented foot-sweep. Damaging my faith in sea planes a little, the 4:30 departure obstructed the path of the Washington State Ferry, and we couldn't figure out why. I love it here so much and have tromped over a good deal of it so far.
I'll be here overnight and leaving on that same 4:30 flight tomorrow. Not sure yet what's on for tonight; South Beach was mentioned at some point, though maybe for tomorrow, and people seem skeptical that sufficient beer will be supplied at the social to satisfy the grad-student armada. Tomorrow, who knows? I wouldn't be sad to bum around downtown, but I do wish I could see me some orcas.
Reading: Jaran, which I finally found at the U Bookstore, new, of all places. Got a beautiful little Ted Chiang novella at the same time, which I cuddled despite "life cycle" actually being two words.
