books are good
Jul. 15th, 2009 11:19 pmJust lucked into remarkably good sick-with-cramps-and-headache reading this week off the library shelf.
Evernight by Claudia Gray has a well-deserved cover blurb by L.J. Smith. If you are a Smith fan, do not read anything further about this book, just hurry up and jump in. There is a moment of great and ridiculous excellence for which you should not be spoiled. Think Night World, and don't think too hard.
Magic Burns by Ilona Andrews is an example of why I keep picking up paranormal romances. The obligatory romantic elements are present and cliched but take a seat way in the back of the bus, making visible the actual worldbuilding (approximate postapocalypse due to alternating waves of magic and technology), well-written action scenes, and pleasing folkloric plot. Also, for some reason I love the idea of were-hyenas who leave odd sex toys lying around, but that could just be me.
