another thing I do in the lab: beat the odds (I hope)

Yesterday, I transplanted just over 500 seedlings from agar media to pots (9/pot). The scary part is that, even though I went from about as many plants as the other researchers to eleventy kajillion plants, I will probably not get one of the genotypes I'm looking for. I'll be sowing more of that cross today. It's segregating for five alleles, four of which need to be homozygous mutant and one which needs to be heterozygous.

1/4 * 1/4 * 1/4 * 1/4 * 1/2 = 1/512. Whee.
