Dear Math 124 Students,
 
Lecture was not cancelled last Thursday, despite the sign on the door.  I
apologize to those of you that came early, read the sign and left.  We
discussed Section 2.1 and took Quiz 1, though I will discussed the
details in lecture tonight.  I assigned only reading for homework,
Sections 2.1 through 2.4, which we will begin looking at tonight.

I hope I have regained enough equilibrium by the time class starts not to cry, smack him in the head, or complain to the administration. How he handles this matter of the quiz will determine a lot of that, though. And the fact that he just now sent the email does not help.

Check the headers of the email, too - not knowing what was on the sign, nor whether the sign was accurate or a forgery, but it would seem one or the other was false?

It was an official sign from the school. They're just laser-printed, anyone could've done it if they'd cared enough to copy it, but it seems unlikely and it looked right. Headers are fine. And I don't see where someone else would be likely to get all our email addressses.

Something was up. One hopes he will have a good explanation.

That bites. Maybe the class was going to be cancelled but he changed his mind at the last minute? Maybe the last class in that room was cancelled and they forgot to take the sign down? Maybe it's just a continuation of the general "people on crack" theme from last week?

In addition to the Massive Apologies for this sort of confusion, a better approach would have been to discuss the quiz with a class, and make it some kind of take home assignment.

Feel free to mention to him that you know a community college math teacher who has an orange belt in kung fu. Especially if he doesn't know that "orange belt" means "knows just enough to hurt herself".

This actually takes the cake¹ from the crummiest example of teacher flakiness I'd heard of, where the prof skipped town (for Microsoft) before the final, without telling anyone.

¹ damp and rich, with green sugar frosting, poisoned, yes.
