tomato notes
Sep. 6th, 2003 02:32 pmThe Green Zebra has stayed pretty small and only set two fruits. It's hard to tell when these are ready; the ones I see at the market are sort of a sea-green with whitish striations, and mine never went quite that color. They're yellow-green with green now -- well, it is, I ate one, and it did prove to be ripe. The flavor was all right, like a Roma but with more acid in the seed hollows. The only reason to grow this one in particular is for the color.
Much more successfully, the Dona has probably a dozen fruits so far and more flowers coming. These are a nice classic red, slightly heart-shaped, with a good garden-tomato flavor and a medium-thick skin that tends to split. My best tomato experience this summer was picking one that was HOT from the sun and eating it in slices (after biting it directly proved too messy for indoors). This one has a better location with more hours of afternoon sun, which might explain its better performance.
