Lots of stuff today. I'll be nice for those of you who may not care and use my

Special Mega Happy LJ-Cut Power!

First off, we have news about what happens after you're dead. How long do you suppose it will be before the advertisers pick this up?

Wisdom and foolishness from Japanese fashion:
"Of course, if your clothes are covered with jewels you can't go to war."
There have been at least five reported shoe-related fatalities, one involving a twenty-five-year-old who died after tumbling off her own footwear, and another who lost control of her car's brake pedal and crashed into a pole, thereby killing her passenger.

Moving on to the erotic and bizarre ('cause we don't go there every time or anything), please observe the fascinating world of Taschen eCards, new airport x-rays, and caribou condoms.

Strangeness and cool technology:

People get mad at me when I think people are doing cool things with computer viruses. Well, they are. The one the link talks about was pretty clearly a proof of concept, but I have to deplore it anyway -- I get grumpy about chain emails, and the worm would cause more junk mailing than they do.

Some clever people have made a really nifty-looking 3D file system browser for OS X. OS X is pretty anyway, but this is beyond cool. Want the new iMac. Want the new iMac. Want the new iMac.

Cool wargaming toys! Anything called Spurious Victorian Armored Fighting Vehicles has my seal of approval right away.

Crackpots off the port bow -- The Anomalist has an article about mutated organisms eating Mir. They can't quite seem to decide whether the organisms are viruses, bacteria, or, indeed, largish worms.

I've resisted blogging most of the "person is a mean bastard and therefore funny" links I find, but I find myself succumbing to Past Due. It makes sense, it's silly yet bitchy, and he's wasting the time of people who work for large corporations of which I do not approve. Okay then!

I heart Jim Munroe. He's a pretty good author, too - you should read Angry Young Spaceman.

The Victorian Armored Fighting Vehicles are delightfully whacked, though as a combat tracked vehicle mechanic and commander, I look at them and think "meat on the table." They would be pretty helpless against any kind of a modern tank, self-propelled gun, tank destroyer, or even Mechanized Infantry fighting vehicle. I don't think they'd hold up well against modern Infantry either. The heavy weapons platoon of an Infantry Battalion would make short work of those things.

But they're great fun for table-top gaming, I'm sure.

I think that image is from one of the newish millimeter-wave scanny things, not an actual X-ray. (There was some privacy-related flap about them a year or two ago, also. The manufacturers seem to be responding by making the scanner recognize naked people and only show things that don't seem to be flesh.)

The Spurious Victorian Vehicles site is kewl! I wonder if they all use reciprocating steam engines, or if they make use of the turbine technology doubtless developed by the Victorian Jet Works?

I'm pretty sure I left my hat at your place Saturday night. You have it, yes?

I haven't seen any anomalous hats. What am I looking for?

Uh oh, I hope it's there, since it's not anyplace else. A sort of maroon velvet beret-type thing.

Hmm. Cats might interpret as sock, so could be anywhere. I will seek it this evening.
